How many sessions will I need?

This is entirely dependent on your situation. I offer short-term and long-term therapy, which can be tailored to your specific needs and preferences. For acute issues, short term therapy, which is normally around 6-12 sessions, might be a good fit. Some clients I work with are happy to move on after 6 sessions or less, while others I have been working with for over a year. Often throughout the therapeutic process, you might decide you would like to delve deeper into certain issues or explore different topics that you may not have initially considered. In this case, we can simply extend the number of sessions to suit your needs. After each session, I will check with you about whether you would like to book another session or if you feel you would like to put a pause in the process or go forward on your own.

How frequent are these sessions?

In terms of session frequency, most people opt for weekly sessions initially, (sometimes biweekly in certain situations) and then move to fortnightly sessions as they feel more able to manage their situation. This is completely up to you. However, it is important to note that sometimes weekly sessions can build a positive momentum that allow you to make the most of the process, which can be halted when having frequent large time gaps between sessions. Alternatively, there may be times, particularly towards the end of the therapeutic process, where having more time between sessions gives you the opportunity to experience that you are managing well on your own before you choose to move on.

Why can it be so difficult to find an English-speaking psychologist or psychotherapist who is paid by the Krankenkasse?

A requirement for sessions to be covered by the Krankenkasse is having a so-called “Approbation” for psychologists/psychotherapists. You can only receive this if you have completed all your training in Germany. Therefore, many English-speaking practitioners are unable to access this benefit.
